- If you could create a
- quarterback from scratch,
- you would probably end
- up with Steve Young of
- the San Francisco 49ers.
- Steve is among the most talented
- quarterbacks in the history of the game. He
- can throw with the best passers, and he can
- run like a running back.
-
- Steve grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut,
- and played football, basketball, and baseball
- in high school. He accepted a football
- scholarship to play at Brigham Young
- University in Utah. Steve wanted to play
- quarterback, but the Cougars already had
- seven players competing for that spot.
- Steve kept on working, and by his
- senior year at BYU, he was an All-
- America selection at
- quarterback, leading the
- NCAA in total offense
- (running and passing
- yardage combined). After
- graduating from BYU, Steve signed a contract
- to play for the Los Angeles Express of the
- new United States Football League. He
- played parts of two seasons in the new
- league, and left just before it folded. In one
- game, he became the only player in pro
- football history to throw for 300 yards and run
- for 100 yards in the same game.
-
- The NFLΓÇÖs Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected
- Steve in a special draft in 1984. Steve played
- one-and-a-half seasons with the Bucs, and
- their record was 3 and 18. The San
- Francisco 49ers thought Steve was
- good, even though his
- team was not. They
- traded for Steve in 1987,
- so that he could serve as
- a backup to their great
- quarterback, Joe Montana.
-
- After nearly four seasons of subbing for Joe,
- Steve finally got his chance to start when Joe
- was injured for all of the 1991 season. That
- year, Steve led the NFL in passing. In 1992,
- with Joe still hurt, Steve led the league in
- passing again, and was named the NFLΓÇÖs
- Most Valuable Player.
-
- After SteveΓÇÖs two spectacular seasons as a
- starter, Joe was traded to the Kansas City
- Chiefs. In 1993, Steve led the league in
- passing for the third straight year, but
- the Niners fell short in the
- playoffs for the second
- straight season to the
- Dallas Cowboys. Fans
- began to wonder if the
- Niners could have gone further with Joe at
- quarterback.
-
- But Steve put that doubt to rest in 1994, when
- he led the league in passing for the fourth
- straight year and directed the Niners to a 13-
- 3 regular season record and a 49-26 Super
- Bowl victory over the San Diego Chargers.
- Steve was named MVP of the Super Bowl
- and is now the highest-rated passer in NFL
- history.
